Change is on the way

Look out people change is on the way. To be completely honest with you I have not been 100% happy with the look of this blog, so to fix this I have been working on developing my own website. This is completely new to me so has been a very steep learning curve, but also lots of fun. In developing this website I am also going to share with you a new venture I have been undertaking. Up until this point I have been keeping my study fairly quiet but after recent conversations with fellow classmates I have decided to share what I am doing with those reading this blog. So stay tuned for my new website and more information about what I am studying and how this may help you, yes we could be working together so stay tuned.

How to get back up when life gets you down

monday quote

We have all had them, those moments in life when things keep going wrong and everything seems hard. Why is it though that some people are able to get back up and keep going, they see past all that is happening, or they see it but keep going anyway? What makes them different to those who find it hard to get back up or who stay down for that little bit longer?

I 100% believe that we are all capable of being the first type of person. The one who bounces back, who keeps going no matter what. Most of it comes down to attitude as the starting quote said “Think positive and positive things will happen.” If you believe you can do something, you will. If you believe you can deal with whatever is happening, you will. Unfortunately the opposite also occurs. If you believe everything is too hard and you can’t cope, then guess what, you won’t cope and you will stay feeling down.

So how do we swift this belief from positive to negative, because lets face it we are all going to have things happen that bring us down, but the important thing is getting back up again. One thing I like to do is repeat positive affirmations (which I know to some people sounds really weird), but trust me it works. When those negative voices start to louder, repeating affirmations can help you get back to that positive place. Some affirmations I use are:

+ All is well.

+ I am capable of anything.

+ This too shall pass.

I especially like the last one as it reminds me that whatever I am feeling is ok, because it won’t last forever. There is no need to fight the way you are feeling, as eventually it will change.

As well as positive self-talk it is important to have a good self care plan that you can put in place when things don’t go according to plan. This includes things you do that make you feel happy, calmed, relaxed and take your mind off other things that are happening.  A good friend of mine told me she has a ‘happy book’ that contains a list of things that as the name suggests make her happy. When she is feeling down she opens the book and it gives her a nice reminder of how she can change how she is feeling. What could you include in your happy book? Here are some suggestions to get you started.

+ Have a shower / take a bath.

+ Listen to music.

+ Dance around the house.

+ Read a book / magazine.

+ Go for a run.

+ Meditate.

+ Have a cup of tea.

+ Sit outside, experience natures, get some fresh air.

+ Cook

+ Yoga.

+ Write in a journal.

+ Paint / draw.

What else can you add to the list? What do you enjoy doing? What makes you happy? I encourage you to make your own ’happy book’ I have and just the process of doing it made me happier.

Please leave some comments below I would love to hear what makes you happy and what is in your self care plan.

Confession time…

I have a confession to make…..I have not been following my own happiness project and it has nearly been a month since my last post. On reflection I have decided that maybe my timing in starting this blog was not the best. I got caught up in the excitement of it all and did not think about I could maintain this in the long term. At the time of starting my blog I was on summer holidays so had plenty of time to spend writing and creating, now that I am back at work, I of course have less time and have found it difficult to fit in everything that I want to do. Looking back over the past month I have come to the realization that changes need to be made, so that I am able to follow all of my passions and interests. The result of these changes will hopefully be regular positing on this bog and facebook page.

How this will happen:

+ A schedule will be created. I have found in the past I work better when I have structure, so giving myself specific days to write will be beneficial.

+ A bank of ideas will be put together – this will make writing posts a lot easier, especially when I am stuck for ideas.

+ Be kind to myself – if I don’t follow everything perfectly it’s ok

The last month has taught me a few valuable lessons:

+ Don’t be hard on yourself when things don’t go to plan.  I had grand ideas for my blog and was so sure that I would regularly put up new posts, as you can see this didn’t quite happen. Instead of beating myself up about it, I told myself that it was ok and when the time I was right I would get back to my blog.

+ Don’t force things. Not once did I try and force myself to write, or force myself to make the time. I feel that if I had done that it wouldn’t have been authentic, it wouldn’t have been really me. So I just sat with it and went with how I was feeling.

In saying all that I have realized that more effort does need to be applied, that this blog wont develop itself.

So my pledge to my readers is to put more time and energy into this blog, no more excuses!!!

My happiness project

happy picture

What exactly is happiness? How do we know we are truly happy? Does thinking about happiness actually make you happier? These questions and more were the focus of the book The Happiness Project by Gretchen Rubin (add link) I read and thoroughly enjoyed this book over the Christmas break. A quick overview for those who have not heard of it; Gretchen embarks on a year long happiness project, each month has a different focus and different resolutions to keep, with of course the over all aim of becoming happier. The book was a fascinating look into what makes people happy and the many different views that are surrounding this topic. I took away two main things from the book; the first being happiness is different for everyone, what makes one person happy may not make the next person and that’s ok. The second thing was to focus on the little things you do, how you speak, what you think and all those things we do without even thinking about it.

As you can imagine this got me thinking about my own happiness and what really makes me happy. I came to the conclusion that like many people I am not entirely sure what makes me happy. I also realized that I am guilty of doing things because I thought I should. An example of this is growing your own vegies. I like the idea of it and often read about people who get so excited about it, but I realized that this does not interest me and that’s ok. I am more than happy going to the market for my vegies. It’s all about finding what interests you and letting go of the rest; don’t do something just because you have heard how much other people love it.

I then naturally starting thinking about starting my own happiness project, what could I be doing to make myself happier? What could I focus on? What could I change? Instead of doing a year long happiness project I have decided to do one month starting in Feb. To me doing something for a year is a long time and a little bit overwhelming, focusing on a month seems a lot more achievable. Who knows I might have so much fun I do a second month.  My focus is going to be on nutrition + exercise. I have come up with a list of resolutions that I aim to stick to for the month. I will keep a chart of my progress and also take pictures to share with you all in a future post.

My overall focus: Nutrition + exercise.

My resolutions:

+ Drink 2L of water daily

+ Move my body everyday

+ See my personal trainer once a week

+ Cut out sugar from my diet

+ Write a gratitude list – I know this is not really nutrition and exercise but I really wanted to do it, so have included it anyway!!

So there you have it my resolutions for the month of Feb. As you can see they are not massive things and I’m not making any radical changes but I am sure if I stick to this I will feel better and happier.

So who will join me? What will your focus be? What are your resolutions? You still have a few days to decide. Think small, simple and achievable

Below is an example of my resolutions chart; I will tick it off everyday.

So come and join me, give it a go, you never know you might end up a little happier!!

What choices are you making?

choices blog

The other day I went to the kitchen to make lunch and on the bench was some lovely fresh sourdough bread. My first thought was that would make an awesome sandwich – I should add here that I am gluten intolerant, so yeah at the time it might be good but later on not so good! As I was feeling unmotivated to make lunch this thought continued a bit longer until I remembered a great post I had recently read by Melissa from a path to wellness. The article talked about how we always have choices, everything we do is because we choose to do it. So with that in mind I chose to instead make a healthy salad that I knew would be better for me. It was like something changed inside my head and all of a sudden I thought hang on a minute you could be making a much better decision here. To be honest though the thought of a vegemite sandwich did stay in my mind for a long time!!

This small aha moment did get me a little excited – what else can I change in my life just by making a different decision? Let me just get one thing clear I am not talking about huge decisions and huge changes, I am talking about small simple decisions that we sometimes make without even thinking about it. These are two ways I came up with;

+ Instead of constantly thinking about my lack of money I plan to change it around and think about how I am currently spending my money and how that can be changed. What can I decide to do differently that in the long run will be better for me. Maybe I really don’t need that extra coffee, magazine or book.

+Instead of getting frustrated about being tired all the time I am going to think about what I am feeding my body, am I really making the best decisions or do I just like to think that I am. So whenever I go to eat something I now think is this the best thing for me? Will this make me feel better? If the answer is no, I don’t eat it and I make a different decision.

This concept made me realize that each of us holds so much power, we can totally chose what we want to do, who we want to be, how we want to think and what we want to believe. It’s about reminding yourself that in every moment you decide what you are going to do, no one else. YOU hold the power.

So I ask you how are you going to use your power? What decisions would you like to start making? What decisions could you maybe stop making? Share your thoughts and comments below I would love to hear from you.

Hello + Welcome

just leap

Hello + welcome

I have taken the leap and have started a blog so welcome to my first ever blog post!!

This is both an exciting and scary moment. Exciting because I have been thinking about this for a while and now I am finally doing it. I am putting myself and my passion out there, which brings me to the scary part – putting yourself out there. I am telling you I have had many thoughts running through my head as to why I shouldn’t do this “What will people think?”” What if no one likes it?” “What if no one reads it?” and the list goes on and on, but I then think to myself I have nothing to lose and to just give it a go. So that’s what I am doing taking a leap and just giving it a go!!

I am really excited to share with you my own personal journey and in doing so hopefully inspire and encourage you to live your best life possible. I hope a positive happy life will be a space where you leave feeling inspired and ready to tackle the world.

I hope you enjoy what I have to offer.
